In this blog I will be reflecting on Thursday’s class exercise, where I and my fellow students were asked to find something in common with these three films, Plato's Cave ,Miss Representation, and The Mask You Live In. I have found some similarities by using symbolism in Plato’s Cave to express what i feel and believe link the three movies together, I but would like to stress the issue that Plato (427-347 B.C.) was way before our time but somehow still connects with what going on today.
As I watched the clip of Plato’s Cave my mind started to combine the information of what I obtained from watching Miss Representation and The Mask You Live In in with the information I was receiving from watching the film Plato’s Cave. It made me feel as though that not much has changed, even with the times being totally different. The clip starts off by saying “ Imagine prisoners that have spent their entire lives chained, deep inside a cave.” and it gives the visual of men chained inside a dark cave, chained looking in one direction. By comparing symbolically Plato’s Cave with The Mask You Live In and Miss Representation it will help you understand my point of view of how all three films are intertwined with each other. In Plato’s Cave you have the Prisoners = us, human beings, chained = held down due to our lack of knowledge, awareness of self, not breaking free of what’s considered to normal, and the cave = what we are only allowing ourselves to be subjective to, being in the darkness, not exposing ourselves to something otherly. The fire and the shadows combined give off images that is seen as distorted, very large, unreal, in a repeated pattern, leaving one to think that is what’s of the world. In The Mask You Live In and Miss Representation these are some of the issues they talk about. All Three context have common variables. We in this day and time are the humans “chained” meaning some of us are allowing ourselves to be confined in darkness, believing in the distorted we see in the media. The fire and shadowy images can represent the media and how it has control on what messages it choose to broadcast for us to see. The Cave, lack our own level of consciousness, self awareness. Plato’s message (in my opinion) was to break free of the Cave (media) and chains, (lack of knowing, experience) and allow yourself to be enlightened by the world, and the natural beauty it. What good is it to live a life through someone else’s eyes and experiences other than your own.

I liked how you mentioned how not much has changed over thousands of years and that our generation is still quite similar to that time period because that goes to show that only few little people are really motivated enough to make a difference.

I like how you compared what we see in the media to what the slaves saw in the cave.

This post sounds link the beginning of a powerful argument. Is this the direction you are headed in for your research project?
